died Sunday, March 19, 2006 in the Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne where he had been admitted on Friday.

He was born on July 21, 1928 in Churubusco, a son of Willard S. "Pop" and Genevieve Schuman Phillips.

In 1935 his family moved to Columbia City where he attended the West Ward School and graduated from the Columbia City High School in 1946. Mr. Phillips received a BS degree in business from Indiana University in 1950.

After completing his education, he returned to Columbia City and joined his father in the operation of the Phillips Friendly Mobile service on South Main Street. Later, they opened the Phillips Firestone Store on East VanBuren Street. In October 1963, he started his employment with the Holmes & Company in Columbia City, retiring as vice president of the company on August 31, 1991 with twenty-eight years of service.

Phillips served in the U. S. Army Reserves for fourteen years.

On January 20, 1952, he was united in marriage to M. Jeanie Palmer of Anderson and they have always made their home in the Columbia City community.

Phillips has served as the councilman at large on the Columbia City Common Council since January 1992.

He was a member of the Columbia City United Methodist Church, the Columbia City Elks, the S.A.E Fraternity at Indiana University, past president of the Old Settlers Day Association, the Columbia City Jaycees, the Optimist Club and the Methodist MenĀ's Club.

In addition to serving on the common council, Phillips has served on the Columbia City Planning Commission for fifteen years and the Board of Works for four years.

Phillips enjoyed golf, fishing, traveling and spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

The surviving relatives include his wife, Jeanie; a son, Craig (Elizabeth) Phillips, Vero Beach, Florida; two daughters, Betty Overdeer and Nancy (Douglas) Graft both of Columbia City; eight grandchildren, Craig Roberts, Melissa and Alexander Phillips, Jessica and Allison Overdeer, Jamie (Raphael) Starr, Kayla and Austin Graft.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dewitt "Brassie" Phillips.

The funeral service will be held at 11 am Thursday in the Columbia City United Methodist Church with the Rev. Paul Arnold, officiating. The burial will be in the Greenhill Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm Wednesday at the Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City and one hour before the service at the church.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Columbia City United Methodist Church Landscaping Fund or the Cancer Services of Allen County. ">
