Clarice E. "Mitch" Mitchell, 94, a former U.S. Navy sailor, lifted his earthly anchor at 6:10 p.m., April 10, 2015, and will report for duty with his Heavenly Father. Mitch was born May 15, 1920, in Akron, Ohio, to Clarice M. and Goldie E. (Killian) Mitchell.

He graduated from Columbia City High School in Columbia City and after graduation, married Martha McCoy. The couple had two children and Martha preceded him in death.

On Sept. 6, 2000, Mitch married Elsie Saksa, who survives.

Mitch spent two years in the U.S. Navy, serving on the U.S.S. Louisville during the Pacific campaign. During his service he was awarded 10 service medals and while on board the heavy cruiser witnessed one of three kamikaze strikes to hit the ship during the war. He achieved the rank of Petty Officer Second Class.

Following the war, Mitch worked as a welder and a molder in LaPorte and eventually worked for Dana Corporation, retiring after 30 years.

Mitch was member of Oak Grove Church of God, American Legion Post #98, VFW #5582 and Fraternal order of Eagles Lodge #1906. It was not uncommon to see him on the harmonica or guitar while playing in a three piece entertainment band in the Columbia City area for years.

Mitch is survived by his wife, Elsie, of Warsaw; his children, Roger Mitchell, of Lake City, Fla. and Carol (Mike) Fahl, of Columbia City; four step-children; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; first wife; daughter-in-law, Sheri Mitchell; brother, Walter Mitchell; sisters, Naomi Trier and Ethel Nicodemus; and granddaughter, Lisa Nichole Mitchell.
