JACK M. SHINNEMAN, 84, a resident of Columbia City, died at 10:51 a.m., Sunday, August 13, 2006 at Miller's Merry Manor where he had been a resident since July 3rd.

He was born February 18, 1922 in Whitley County, Indiana the only child of Harry H. and Cecil E. (Miller) Shinneman. A lifelong resident of Whitley County, he graduated from Columbia City High School. Class of 1940

On December 18, 1942 he was inducted in the United States Army, serving during World War II. While serving in the Armored Infantry Battalion in the European Theater, he received a purple heart. He was honorably discharged February 4, 1946.

On May 4, 1946 he was united in marriage to Retha W. Winfrey. In 1951 they have moved to their present home.

He was employed at Weatherhead for 32 years, retiring in 1983 and Essex Wire for 8 years. He also owned and operated Shinneman Fence Building for 35 years and Shinneman Tree Service for 15 years.

A member of Oak Grove Church of God, he was a former member of American Legion Post #98 and V.F.W. Post #5582.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Retha; four children, Isaac (Linda) Shinneman of Simpsonville, South Carolina, Fred (Christy) Shinneman, Jackie (Jim) Gray and Daniel (Debra) Shinneman, all of Columbia City; seven grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, August 16, 2006 at Oak Grove Church of God, 2426 South Raber Road, Columbia City with Rev. Steve Johnson, church pastor, officiating. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.

The burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery with the American Legion Post #98 presenting military honors.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to Bear Lake Church of God Camp or Oak Grove Church of God.
