MARY MARIE MONROE, 81, a Columbia City native, died Friday, February 10, 2006 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

She was born July 18, 1924 in Fort Wayne, Indiana a daughter of DeWitt and Hazel (Schinbeckler) Monroe. Her formative years were spent in the Columbia City area. She graduated from Columbia City High School in 1942 and Indiana University in 1945, majoring in journalism and English literature.

After graduation, she traveled to Oklahoma to visit friends and accepted a position as city editor for the Vinita, Oklahoma Journal. She later joined Phillips Petroleum Company's Research and Development department, later transferring to the Public Affairs department as a writer for the employer publication Philnews. She became the first female to travel for Phillips throughout the United States and several foreign countries. She also served as assistant editor and later as editor of the assistance program for editors of company field publications within the United States. She retired in 1985 with 38 years of service, and moved to her weekend home on Lake of the Cherokees in Northeast Oklahoma.

She was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Grove, Oklahoma, Phillips organization for women, the Jane Phillips Sorority, served in local and national offices and was a member of numerous employee communication organizations.

Surviving relatives include a sister-in-law, Mary Monroe of Carlsbad, California; two nieces; a nephew; numerous cousins and a host of friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Monroe.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 25, 2006 at Ms. Monroe's lake home in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
