Don Malcolm Conrad, 90, of Thorncreek Township, Whitley County, died at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at his home.

He was born March 31, 1926 in Whitley County, Indiana a son of Fay and Ethel Pearl (Ott) Conrad. As a young boy, his family moved to Whitley County. He graduated from Columbia City High School in 1944 where he was active in FFA.

On February 10, 1948 he married Gladys Auer. They made their home in Thorncreek Township where he served as Trustee and also on the Whitley County School Board, serving as President as well.

In addition to farming, he was an insurance agent for Fidelity Insurance Company

On April 22, 1983 he married Callie Virginia (Stephens) Smith. Don was a home builder and land developer along with his wife, Callie, owning & operating Hoosier Real Estate and Development.

His memberships also include Merriam Christian Chapel Church, Whitley County REMC Board and Thorncreek Township Volunteer Fire Department.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Callie; three children, Laura Conrad of Columbia City, Duane (Martha) Conrad of Germany and Brian (Joy) Conrad of Columbia City; five step children, Nathan (Tina) Smith, Darrel Smith, Jeff Smith, Madaya (Ted) Heindselman and Linda (Doug) Franks, all of Columbia City; 20 grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters, Lavaun Brown, Ronald Conrad, Lucille Herrick, Grace Jagger, Doris Johnson, Jeanette Hess and an infant brother.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, December 30, 2016 at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to Merriam Christian Chapel Church or Parkview Home Health & Hospice.
