G. Eugene "Gene" Hively, 84, a resident of rural Columbia City, died at 10:08 p.m. Thursday, September 11, 2014 at Parkview Oaks where he had been a resident since last month.

He was born September 27, 1929 in Whitley County the only child of Ralph and Violet (Goodman) Hively. His formative years were spent in Smith Township until 1944 when his family moved to Columbia City. He graduated from Columbia City High School in 1947.

On September 27, 1952 he was united in marriage to D. Jean "Jeannie" Ewigleben. They made their home in Fort Wayne for a month and then Columbia City before moving to Thorncreek Township in 1958.

He was employed at Grieger Chevrolet from 1947 to 1952, Linvill Clinic & Hospital for 16 years and Whitley County Memorial Hospital from 1968 until 1984. From 1984 until 1993 he owned and operated Aladdin Carpet Cleaning in addition to driving charter bus.

His memberships include Grace Lutheran Church, a life member of Columbia City Elks Lodge #1417, past president of the former Columbia City Jaycees and past president of the former Kiwanis.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Jeannie; four children, S. Michael Hively of Hudson, Kirk E. (Sandy) Hively of New Mexico, Kimberly R. Helman of Columbia City and Gary W. Hively of Columbia City; nine grandchildren, Lora & Tina Hively, Kalan & Nathan Hively, Lindsey & Derek Hively and Emily, Rachel & Anna Helman; and one great grandson.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church, 204 North Main Street, Columbia City with visitation after 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. The burial will be in Nolt Cemetery. The visitation will also be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.
