Harold A. King, 78, a resident of rural Churubusco in Allen County, died at 1:40 a.m. Friday, June 15, 2007, at Parkview North Hospital in Fort Wayne. He had been in declining health for several years and was taken to the hospital from Sunshine Assisted Living in Fort Wayne, where he had been a resident since December.

Born in Butler on Feb. 24, 1929, a son of Harold D. and Henrietta (Packer) King, he moved with is parents to Columbia City in 1936 and spent his formative years there. He graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1949 and later served in the U.S. Army.

On Aug. 1, 1960, he was married in North Webster to Hilda M. Wince and had lived in Eel River Township near Churubusco since 1961.

He was engaged in farming and had been employed as a tool maker at Merkler Machine Works in Fort Wayne for 34 years, retiring from there in 1997.

A member of the Modern Woodsmen, in his leisure time he enjoyed beekeeping, raising apples, woodworking and gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Hilda; six children, Austin (Lori) King and Arden (Jill) King, both of Churubusco, Ivan (Nikki) King and Eric (Jennifer) King, both of Fort Wayne and Brenda (Craig) Sanford and Bradley (Kristin) King, both of Churubusco; a brother, Roderick (Rhonda) King of Larwill; three sisters, Eldora (Dan) Daniel of Columbia City, Carolyn (Jan) Fleck of Warsaw and Treva (Stan) Berry of Stockton, Calif.; nine grandchildren, one step-grandchild and two step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, an infant sister, Mardell King is deceased.

The funeral service is at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco, with the Rev. Terry Zolman, pastor at Merriam Christian Chapel, officiating. The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Interment with military graveside rites is at Eel River Cemetery, south of Churubusco.
