Notes:	SHIRLEY A. GATES, 76, a resident of Columbia City, died at 1:50 p.m., Friday, May 19, 2006 at The Oaks Living Center where she had been a resident since 1999. She was born April 12, 1930 in Allen County, Indiana a daughter of George Scott and Mildred (Smith) Gates. Her formative years were spent in Columbia City and she graduated from Columbia City High School in 1948. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Ball State University. From 1953 until her retirement in 1991, she served as a Registered Nurse at Whitley County Memorial Hospital. Her memberships include Columbia City United Methodist Church, Tri Kappa and Daughters of the American Revolution. Surviving relatives include a sister in law, Esther (John) Bower of Auburn; a niece, Laura Lefever of Columbia City; two nephews, J. Scott Gates of Columbia City and Steven Gates of Carmel. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by a brother, Jack Scott Gates. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday in the Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Pastor Mark Need associate pastor of Columbia City United Methodist Church, officiating. The burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm Monday at the funeral home. For those who wish, memorials may be made to Whitley County Community Foundation or Columbia City United Methodist Church.
