John Smith Wilson, 85, of Columbia City, passed away Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017 at The Hearth at Sycamore Village. He was born Oct. 26, 1931 in Columbia City, the son of Wilfred and Beulah (Smith) Wilson. His formative years were spent in Columbia City and Noble County.

He received a biology degree from Indiana University, then graduated from IU School of Medicine as a medical doctor. After an internship in Lima, Ohio, he returned to Columbia City in 1957 to practice medicine. He was a doctor for 36 years in the community, specializing in family medicine and anesthesiology.

Dr. Wilson was one of the charter Whitley County representatives for the planning and conception of the Otis R. Bowen Center for Human Services in Warsaw in 1959 and served on the Board of Directors for many years.

He was elected County Coroner in 1960, was Whitley County Health Officer for many years, and had memberships in the Indiana and Whitley County Medical Associations.

On July 31, 1982, John was united in marriage to Patricia Wright. After retirement, they moved to Deland, Fla. His hobbies included woodworking, classical music and reading, especially the Bible. He was a member of the Dunfee Missionary Church.

John is survived by his wife, Patricia; his daughters, Cathy (Donald) Hunter, of Columbia City, and Kimberly (Chris) Egolf, of Ligonier; grandchildren, Seth (Allie) Hunter, of Des Plaines, Ill., Claire (Drake) Sayre, of Middletown, Caleb (Mischa) Egolf and Emily Egolf, both of Portland, Ore.; two great-grandchildren; five step-children; four step-grandchildren; and a sister, Lois (Wilson) Tharp, of Frankfort.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a son, Michael Thomas Wilson.

A memorial service in John's honor will be held on a later date at Dunfee Missionary Church. Burial will take place at Sparta Cemetery in Kimmell.
