Jerry P. Gruver, 64, was pronounced dead at 5 p.m. Tuesday June 30, 1998 in the emergency room at Kosciusko Community Hospital in Warsaw, where he was taken after suffering a heart attack at his home in Pierceton.

Born in Butler on July 22, 1933, he was a son of Paul R. and Dorothy Carrick Gruver. Attending the Butler School for the first nine years, his family then moved to Columbia City, where he graduated from high school in 1951.

In November 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict.

After discharge from military duty, he was employed at W.T. Grant Company in Fort Wayne for 20 years, then transferred to Wayne Home Equipment Company, retiring three years ago.

On April 11, 1970 he was united in marriage to Laura V. Moore and they made their home in New Haven for 25 years, moving to their country home near Pierceton three years ago.

A lifetime member of Howard W. Bandelier V.F.W. Post 2457, hewas a member of Columbia City American Legion Post 98, Masonic Lodge 189, Scottish Rite, Mizpah Shrine, Whitley County Shrine Club and Johnny Appleseed Hillbilly Degree.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Laura; a son Jerry Gruver, Jr. and his wife Carolyn, Pierceton; two daughters, Chistine Keenan and her husband Mike, Pine Grove, Pa., and Theresa Dolliar and her husband Ed, Auburn; a stepson, Walter Allard Jr., and his wife, Jenny, Columbia City; a step-daughter, Shannon Groce, and her husband Bill, Columbia City; two brothers, Ted Gruver, Baltimore; and Floyd Gruver, Colby, Kan.; two sisters, Shirley Spence, Horseshoe Bay, Texas;and Dorothy Hiscutt, New Port Richey, Fla.; 5 grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren and 23 step-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service is at 11 a.m. Friday at Smith and Sons Funeral Homes in Columbia City, with the Rev. J. Phillip Blake officiating.

Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Masonic Lodge 189 will conduct a memorial service at 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Burial is at Greenhill Cemetery, with American Legion Post 98 presenting military honors.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to Shriner's Children's Hospital.
