Dr. Verlin G. Hile, 70, Columbia City dentist, died at 12:45 a.m. Monday, Oct. 3, 2005, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne where he was admitted on Friday, Sept. 23.

Born on Aug. 2, 1935, in Columbia City, he was a son of Jacob and Mary (Stump) Hile. An all State football players, he graduated from Columbia City High School. He then graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington and later Indiana University School of Dentistry in Indianapolis.

Dr. Hile began his 47 years of dental practice in Columbia City at Grant, Grant and Hile, later establishing Hile & Parnell where he was currently practicing.

On June 30, 1990, he was united in marriage to Gladith G. (Knafel) Thurston. They always made their home east of Columbia City.

He was a member of Isaac Knapp, Indiana Dental Association, American Dental Association, Pierre Fauchard Academy, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, served as past president of Columbia City Rotary and was a past master of Columbia City Lodge 189 Free & Accepted Masons.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Gladith; a daughter, Laura Hile of Indianapolis; a son, Jay Matthew (Melissa) Hile of Columbia City; three step-children, Brenda Smith of Silver Lake; Richard (Carol) Oliver of Cromwell, and Robert (Rebecca) Oliver of Huntington; two grandsons; nine step-grandchildren; and two sisters, Leola M. Goodrich of Grants Pass, Ore., and Carolyn F. Parnell of Columbia City.

He was preceded in death by a son, Andrew Barrett "Barry" Hile and a brother, Rex E. Hile. The funeral service is at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at Smith and Sons Funeral Home in Columbia City, with the Rev. Donald Poyser officiating. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today. Burial is at Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam.

The Columbia City Lodge 189 F.&A.M. will provide a Masonic service at 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
