Viola Mae Macy, 88, formerly of rural Columbia City, died peacefully April 9, 2024, at Cumberland Trace Senior Living, Plainfield, Indiana, where she has been a resident since February 2022.

Born on February 21, 1936, in Whitley County, Indiana, the daughter of the late Robert and Mildred (Rigel) Burns. She spent her formative years in Whitley County, and graduated from Columbia City High School in 1954.

On June 20, 1954, she married Thomas O. Macy. They made their home in Loon Lake for three years before moving to their home in Thorncreek Township. Recently they moved to Plainfield, Indiana to be close to her son. Thomas died August 21, 2023.

Viola was a homemaker and also worked for United Telephone as an operator for two years.

She was a past member of Big Lake Church of God, the Happy Homemakers Extension Club and was a member of the Friendly Neighbors Ladies Aide.

Viola enjoyed gardening, sewing, life in the country and her family.

Surviving is her son, Kevin D. (Julie) Macy of Plainfield; daughter-in-law, Carol Macy; grandchildren, Dawn Macy, Adam (Adrienne) Macy, Brenden (Natalie) Macy, Karlee (Bruce) Oliver and Carissa Macy; great grandchildren, Quintin Macy, Braiden Macy, Maddie Macy, Makayla Thomas, BruceLee Oliver, Jet Oliver, Parker Macy and Holland Macy.

She was preceded in death by her son, Mark E. Macy and brother, Gene Burns.

The funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Burial is at the Keister Cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.
