Memorium at http://www.mi-harness.com/SBreds/Memor10.htm:

Tom Wiley, a longtime horseman and past president of the Illinois Harness Horsemen's Association, died Feb. 18 at his home in Glenwood, Ill., after battling amyloidosis, a rare heart virus. He was 59.

Introduced to harness racing at county fairs in Indiana and Illinois by his father, a livestock manager of cattle and swine, Mr. Wiley studied animal science at Purdue University and then entered the sport himself in 1966 while working as a fieldman for Hampshire Swine and serving as a ringman at sales.

In 1972 he became a full-time trainer-driver, and campaigned his stable throughout Illinois. One of his top performers was Sporty Maid p,3,1:56 ($101,803), the 1985 Illinois Pacing Filly of the Year, who went on to win for Wiley at The Meadowlands.

Mr. Wiley also owned horses like Rave Along p,4,1:54.3f ($163,768), Captain Dennis p,4,1:58f ($106,078) and Sunshine Gem p,7,1:56.1 ($87,855). Among the horses he bred were Eagle Event p,8,1:56s ($239,818), Casino Team p,7,1:51.1 ($205,568) and Cuddly C p,4,1:56.4f ($90,436).

He also started his own company, Livestock Tech, Inc., which ships livestock overseas.

A director of the IHHA from 1995 to 1997, Mr. Wiley served as first vice-president in 1996 and became president in 1997. He was also a member of the USTA.

Mr. Wiley is survived by his wife of 33 years, Carolyn; his mother, Ida Bernice Jennings; and two sisters, Opal Brubaker and Dora Wagner.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center, Research Park, University of Missouri, 113 Gwynn Hall, Columbia, MO 65211.

Tom's widow Carolyn may be contacted at 641 North Carroll Pkwy, Glenwood, IL 60425.
