Joyce Leedy, D.V.M. - 1940-2006
Forever Remembered in Our Hearts

Born in 1940 and a proud Hoosier, Joyce Leedy lived a life of joyful energy. She jet-skied with her son Daniel and his friends, completed marathons and long bike trips, and successfully pursued a long wish list activities. She loved legitimate theater, movies, concert, classes at the Free Enterprise Institute, travel and picnics.

After more than two decades as a single mom owning and operating a veterinary hospital in Costa Mesa, she sold the practice and drove through the USA. On her first Antarctic cruise Joy fell in love with penguins. She took hundreds of photos and was determined to return.

Her second Antarctic cruise began around New Year's day 2006, for return on January 28. On January 22, in rough seas, she lost her footing and plunged down a ship's ladder to the deck. Dr. Joyce died with her boots on, doing what she loved.

She is survived by her son Daniel and her sister Corrine Shoda, and dozens of friend in the West who will sorely miss her ebullient spirit.

In the course of finding homes for dogs and cats I found Dr. Leedy. When I asked prospective pet adopters if they had a veterinarian, especially in the Costa Mesa area, I would frequently hear the name Dr. Leedy. She was obviously well thought of. When my local veterinarian retired, I went looking for Dr. Leedy and found a cheerful and compassionate lady. We would stay with her for 15 years. Many of our older pets would spend their last moments in a room that she had for that reason.

Dr. Leedy had lots of faithful clients. She really did not want to take on too many rescue animals, but she did. One of the prominent ones was the small poodle mix, Sammy. He lived part of a year hiding in plants on the riverbed until we caught him. He was a sad looking dog when we brought him to Dr. Leedy and her staff. Sammy still hid during the day for quite a while in his new home. He was just one of the many rescues that would go through Dr. Leedy's capable hands. (Submitted by Leila Nelson)

In Joyce's own words: "I like to travel to far reaches of this earth." Her email address was kittyluver@earthlink.net and phone was (714) 964-1790. She lived at 10121 Jon Day Drive, Huntington Beach, CA 92646.
