Jerry E. Schaper, 68, of rural Columbia City, died at 1:52 p.m. Thursday, November 3, 2011 at Parkview Whitley Hospital where he was admitted on Saturday.

He was born January 11, 1943 in Columbia City, Indiana a son of Harry J. and Bessie M. (Moore) Schaper. His formative years were spent in Columbia City. He graduated from Columbia City Joint High School.

From 1962 until 1966 he served in the United States Army and later Air National Guard.

While in the Philippines, he was united in marriage to Carmela Bastian on March 20, 1967. They made their home in Harlan from 1967 until 1974 when they moved to Churubusco. In 2000 they moved to Hawaii, returning to Thorncreek Township, Whitley County in 2004.

He owned and operated Blue Ridge Mobile Home Park from 1974 until 2000, Aristocrat Restaurant from 1986 until 1992 and Blue Ridge Estates from 1999 until 2000.

His church membership was with St. John's Bosco Church in Churubusco and he was a former member of Grace Lutheran Church.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Carmela; two daughters, Kim M. Schaper of Columbia City and Kelley A. (Drake) Schaper Bianski of Oceanside CA; two brothers, Ted Schaper of Columbia City and Mike Schaper of Indianapolis; and two sisters, Esther Donovan of Fort Wayne and Ruth Miner-Cooney of New York.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Schaper; and two sisters, Joy Lahr and Sue Zent.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in South Park Annex Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to Parkview Home Health & Hospice.
