Michael J. Cook, 70, of Auburn, died Friday, December 19, 2014 at Parkview Noble Hospital, Kendallville.

He was born October 20, 1944 in Columbia City, Indiana a son of Wave Eugene and Marilyn Virginia (Mossburg) Cook. His formative years were spent in Union Township, Whitley County. He graduated from Columbia City Joint High School and was the 1963 Honor Blanket recipient. He continued his education at Butler University where he played football for a year.

On September 12, 1966 he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was honorably discharged September 11, 1972.

He worked as a reporter for Indianapolis TV and later moved to Florida where he delivered oxygen and was district manager for Goodwill Industries. In 1995 he returned to Columbia City and then moved to Garrett. He retired in 2006 from Cox Cabinet.

On May 5, 2000 he was united in marriage to Wanda S. Slone Hughes. They have always made their home in Auburn.

He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. in Garrett and a former member of Elks in Garrett and American Legion in Garrett.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Wanda; a son, Dr. Jason (Tina) Cook of Alabama; three step children, William K. (Brooke) Hughes, Betty S. (Brad) McKinney and Carlos W. Hughes, all of Auburn; two grandchildren, Kinley and Cason Cook; and eight step grandchildren, Katelyn McKinney, Kalista McKinney, Tyler Applegate, Logan Hughes, Hailey Hughes, Makenna Hughes, Taylor Hughes and Kayla Hughes; two brothers, Dennis Cook and Tim Cook, both of Columbia City; and a sister, Tami Martin of South Whitley.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to Parkview Hospice.
