Stephen Lewis McDevitt, 53, a sixth-grade teacher at Indian Springs Middle School, died at 3:42 a.m. Tuesday, December 7, 1999 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. Born December 11, 1945 in Whitley County, he was a son of Norman Donald and Jean Miller Mcfrevitt.

He graduated from Columbia City High School in 1964 and received a bachelor's degree from Huntington College and a master's degree from St. Francis College in Fort Wayne. He had taught sixth grade a total of 31 years 'at Marshall Memorial and Indian Springs.

On September 23, 1978 ,he was united in marriage to Dawn Christine Haney by Pastor Hubert E. Miller at the First Church of God in Columbia City.

A member of First Church of God, he served on the board of directors for the Junior Football League (JFL) and coached girls' and boys' basketball; track and baseball at Coesse, Marshall and
Indian Springs schools.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Dawn; two sons, Colby M. McDevitt and Seth D. McDevitt; his mother, Jean McDevitt; two brothers, Nick (Sue) McDevitt and Keith (Cheryl) McDevitt; two sisters, Debra (Ron) Pratt and Joyce (Rick) Belty; and his in-laws, Robert and-Joy Haney, all of Columbia City; a brother-in-law Mark (Mary) Haney, Fort Wayne and a sister-in-law, Jill (Terry) Gilbert, Uniondale.·

He was preceded in death by his father.

The funeral service begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Church of God with Pastor Hubert E. Miller, retired Church of God pastor and Dr. Clark E. Hobby, of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, New Castle, officiating.

Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral-Home, Columbia City. Burial is at Greenhill Cemetery, Columbia City.

For those who wish, memorials maybe made in memory of Mr. McDevitt to his sons' college fund. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
