Robert Kauffman, 59, of Columbia, Mo., died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006 in Columbia.

Born in Fort Wayne on Feb. 26, 1947, a son of Kenyon and Margaret (Briggs) Kauffman, he graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1965. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from Purdue University and received a master's degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia.

In 1968, he was united in marriage to Susan Alberty in Goshen.

He retired from DYS in 2000 as a deputy director. Since his retirement he worked part-time at Cycle Extreme and at Shakespeare's Pizza. He was formerly employed in the field of corrections by Missouri Board of Probation and Parole, Reality House, the Boone County Juvenile Justice System and the Missouri Division of Youth Services.

An avid bicyclist, he planned to ride Sept. 9 and 10 to raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling and reading.

Survivors include his wife, Susan; a daughter, Sarah Kauffman of New York City, N.Y.; his mother, Margaret Kauffman of Columbia City; a brother, John (Sue) Kauffman of Columbia City; and several nieces and nephews.

His father, Kenyon, and a brother, Kraig Kauffman, preceded him in death.

A memorial service is at 2 p.m. Sunday at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, with a celebration of life reception immediately following in the Community Room.

Memorial bequests may be given in Mr. Kauffman's memory to Habitat for Humanity or Whitley County Humane Society.
