Dr. James Michael Slater, 72, of Fayetteville, [Tennessee] passed away on Saturday (June 8, 2019) at Lincoln Medical Center. Jim was born on Jan. 18, 1947 in Fort Wayne, Ind., to the late Fred Lyman and Vera Viola VanHouten Slater.

He earned his doctor of osteopathic medicine from the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Mo., worked as a trauma surgeon for many years in Mid-Michigan and was a college professor with Ivy Tech Community College.

Jim enjoyed fly fishing, astronomy and spending time with his family. He was larger than life.

Survivors include his devoted wife, Dr. Misty Dawn Miller Slater; daughters, Jessica Sue (Rick) Carter of Ann Arbor, Mich., Emily Michael Slater of Las Vegas, Nev., Breanna Elizabeth Jacobs of Columbus, Ohio, and Kate Isabella Slater, Natalie Erin Slater and Daisy Amelia Slater, all of Fayetteville; son, Ian Stephen Slater, and his wife, Nicole, of Phillipsburg, N.J.; granddaughters, Jane Victoria Carter, Rachel Emily Carter, Abigail Zoe Slater and Caroline Janice Slater; and a brother, Stephen (Anne Jackson) Slater of Ankeny, Iowa.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 2, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fayetteville with the Rev. Father George Panthananickal officiating. Visitation with the family will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. on Monday, July 1, at Higgins Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3, at Union Township Cemetery (Hope Lutheran Cemetery) at 2001 South 500 East, Columbia City, Ind., 46725.
