JAMES MICHAEL "MIKE" WHEELER, 59, of Columbia City, died at 11:20 a.m., Tuesday, February 6, 2007 at The Oaks Living Center where he had been a resident since February 2006.

He was born July 1, 1947 in Peru, Indiana the son of Richard W. and Velma I. (Ramsey) Wheeler. In 1955 his family moved to Columbia City. He graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1965 and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Ball State University.

He taught elementary art classes from 1970 until 1975 at Southwick School in Fort Wayne. In 1975 he moved to North Hollywood, California and worked as a sales representative for May Company. In the early 1980s he returned to Fort Wayne and worked as the assistant manager for Wallpapers To Go. He was later employed at Ream Steckbeck Company. He was then self-employed until his health failed and her returned to Columbia City in 1997.

His memberships include Grace Lutheran Church.

Surviving relatives include his mother, Velma Wheeler of Columbia City; a sister, Deanna Mills (Patrick) Carroll of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and a niece, Megan Ryan.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Rev. Dr. C. James Cress, pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, officiating. The burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Peru. The visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the National Ataxia Foundation. Mike was diagnosed with a rare neuro-degeneration disease, Spino Cerebellar Ataxia.
