Fort Wayne Journal Gazette, Tue. Jan. 03,2012:

Woman shot dead in Huntertown

Melinda A. Jones and George S. West got into some sort of an argument at a home in Huntertown late New Year's Day.

The subject of the argument and the relationship between the two is still unknown, according to police.

But when Allen County police responded to 15220 Hunters Lane near Indiana 3, just south of Gump Road, at 10:40 p.m. Sunday, they found Jones dead of apparent gunshot wounds. Police said Sunday that a long gun was used in the shooting. Police believe West shot Jones before fleeing to nearby DeKalb County Road 70, just west of County Road 5 where he shot himself, according to a statement from the Allen County Sheriff's Department.

"We really don't know what transpired," sheriff's department spokesman Cpl. Jeremy Tinkel said. "Obviously they were having an argument about something."

Jones, 34, died from a gunshot wound or wounds and the death was ruled a homicide, the first in Allen County in 2012, the Allen County Coroner's Office said in a statement.

DeKalb County Coroner Jeff Warner said West, 38, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The Indiana State Police said West was dead when troopers found his vehicle pulled off to the side of road shortly after police responded to the home, Tinkel said in a statement. The address on Jones' driver's license was the same as the home on Hunters Lane, Tinkel said, and there also was another adult and two children in the home at the time of the shooting.

It is unknown whether the children were Jones' or West's, Tinkel said. Police also said they had no record of domestic disputes between the two.
