Prior to this appointment, Evans was named Executive Director of the Stamford Center for the Arts in Stamford, Connecticut. With three theaters including the Palace Theatre and the Rich Forum, the center serves over 250,000 people annually. The center has a full program of activities that include dance, comedy, blues, children's programs, touring Broadway, rock concerts and also serves as the home of the Stamford Symphony Orchestra and the Connecticut Grand Opera.

In February 2002, Evans was appointed by the Governor of Connecticut as Executive Director of the State of Connecticut Commission on the Arts. The $22,000,000 agency was responsible for stewardship and infrastructure support for the arts industry in the State of Connecticut. The organization was successfully reengineered by Evans resulting in the creation of a dynamic three- year business plan that resulted in the merging of the arts office with tourism, history and film offices to support these activities statewide.

In April 2000, Evans was appointed Managing and Producing Director of the Globe Theatres. The Globe, California's oldest legitimate theater, has an annual budget of $14,000,000 and produces 14 productions annually on 3 stages. With a staff of 225 full-time employees, the Globe has sent numerous productions to Broadway and under Mr. Evans leadership launched the national tour of "Stones In His Pockets" and shepherded "Woman In Black" to Off-Broadway.

Douglas C. Evans came to the Globe from The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford, Connecticut, where he served as its Chief Executive Officer. Since Evans joined The Bushnell in 1990, the organization grew both in its programming capacity and in its financial stability. Annual attendance was raised to 400,000 with the number of events at an all-time high of 325. Under Evans' leadership, The Bushnell became a top market for touring Broadway productions. In 1995, The Bushnell's presentation of "The Phantom of the Opera" attracted 146,000 people and established The Bushnell's role in Hartford's tourism and revitalization plans.

Evans also oversaw the growth of The Bushnell's programming initiatives. This included expanded presentations of the classical arts, children's theater, popular artists, dance programs and new ventures in producing a national tour of "The Who's Tommy", "COMPANY" and "Chess" and community collaborations, such as "String Break", a multi-week celebration of classical music. In 1995, "Campaign for Our Bushnell", a $20 million capital campaign was successfully completed, ensuring The Bushnell's ability to advance its mission and develop new community initiatives such as its PARTNERS arts education program, now serving over 6,000 Connecticut students. In June 1999, ground was broken on the construction of a 950-seat theater, which opened in the fall of 2001. The Bushnell's most recent capital campaign, "Fund for the New Bushnell" has been successfully completed with over $39 million raised by the Evans administration toward the $45 million goal. During his tenure he hosted two national symposiums addressing "The Future of Classical Music" and "The Role of the Performing Arts Center in the Community". For his efforts he was awarded the prestigious Horace Bushnell Award.

In addition to his work with major foundations including the Heinz and Wallace, Evans formerly a registered lobbyist in the state of Connecticut is considered to be a leader in government relations for support of the arts and has successfully secured arts funding from both federal and state government. He is a Founding Director of the Connecticut Arts Alliance, past Governor and member of the Executive Committee of the League of American Theatres and Producers, a Tony Awards Voter, a founding member of the Independent Presenters Network and a former Director of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. Evans was presented with a Renaissance Award from the Greater Hartford Chamber of Commerce Downtown Council for his efforts in working towards the revival of downtown Hartford.
