JACKSON, Wyo. - James Richard "Dick" Salzmann, 81, died October 19, 2009, in Jackson, Wyo. He was born in Fort Wayne, Ind., 21 August 1928 to William and Ada Virginia Mero Salzmann. The family moved to the Quad Cities area when Dick was a young boy, where he attended Davenport schools.

During World War II, the family lived in Columbia City, Ind., where he graduated from high school. Upon graduation he served in the U. S. Air Force in Korea. After his discharge, he joined his family in Moline, Illinois, where he attended Augustana College before joining his father and brother at the International Harvester Farmall Works.

He married Suzanne Richardson Perkins 29 May 1965 in the chapel at St. Katherine's School in Davenport. The Salzmanns made their home in Moline until 1988 when they moved to Jackson, Wyo., to be near their children.

Dick loved gardening and was one of the founders of the Quad Cities Orchid Club. He also was active in the Train Club and spent hours creating miniature 110 trains and scenery. He also constructed exquisite model sailing ships.

Dick was an excellent carpenter and for a number of years built scenery for the Quad City Music Guild in Prospect Park in Moline. He enjoyed hiking with the Blackhawk Hike Club and maintained an extensive collection of American stamps.

Richard was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Moline, Illinois, St. John's Episcopal Church in Jackson, Wyo., as well as a long-time and loyal member of Rotary International.

He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Sarah Jane Coleman, and a stepson, Donald S. Perkins, as well as two grandchildren. Scan and Katelyn Coleman, all of Jackson, Wyo., and an older brother, William Salzmann and family of Louisville, Ky.
