Death Comes to Local Woman Edna Knisely Harrison

Community Shocked by News of Death of Edna Knisely Harrison in Washington DC

Columbia City Post Monday, October 17, 1938

A long distance telephone message was received late Monday afternoon by Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Mullett of Washington Township, announcing the death of the latter's niece, Mrs. Clyde Harrison, 41, the former Edna Knisely, of Columbia City.

A telegram was received Monday morning by Mr. and Mrs. George Knisely, announcing the birth of a daughter to the Harrisons at 5 o'clock Monday morning. The death of the mother occurred several hours later.

The announcement of Mrs. Harrison's death comes as a distinct shock to the community. She was graduated from the Columbia City high school and later attended Earlham College. She received her master's degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
She taught in the Whitley County schools and later at St. Joseph, Mo., and Boston, Mass. After receiving her master's degree she became affiliated with the public schools in the nation's capital, and on her birthday, nine years ago was married to Clyde Harrison, manager of the Guardian Life Insurance Co., in Washington.

Two years ago Mr. and Mrs. Harrison traveled to Europe for several weeks, a trip merited by Mr. Harrison for his efficient work.

Mrs. Harrison was born in Columbia township, June 7, 1897 to George and Lillie Berry Knisely, members of two well-known pioneer families of Whitley County. She was an only child.

Mrs. Harrison had been a resident of Washington, DC for almost twenty years, and had become prominent in that city by her activity in church and civic work. She was active in the work of the Presbyterian denomination and was a member of a Presbyterian church in Washington in which Mr. Harrison serves as deacon.

Her survivors are the husband, parents and infant daughter, besides more distant relatives living in Whitley County.

Rev. Geo. B. Dunham of Pierceton, will officiate at funeral rites to be held from the DeMoney Funeral home on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be made in the Stough Cemetery.

The body will arrive in this city on Thursday morning at 9:59 am over the Pennsylvania. The family will receive friends at the funeral home after that time until the hour of the funeral.

Short services will be held in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday afternoon.

Funeral Services

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the DeMoney Funeral Home. Pallbearers were George Myers, Dr. Orville Briggs, Ray Erne, Edgar Strouse, Glen Overdeer, and Sheldon Wunderlich, the first three being classmates of Mrs. Harrison in the local high school.

Interment was made in the Stough Cemetery. Present for the funeral rites: Mr. and Mrs. Carl Berry, Elkhart; Mr. and Mrs. George Harrison and daughter, and Mrs. W. L. Harrison of Lebanon, Ky.; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Mullin, Elwood; Mrs. Mark Hayden and son, of Constantine, Mich.; Mrs. W. B. Strong, of Chicago; Miss Mary
Knisely, Mrs. James Miner and two daughters, of Bowling Green, Ohio; and a large delegation of friends from Pierceton, the home of the parents of Mrs. Harrison. A wealth of flower tributes from friends in Washington, D.C. accompanied the body to this city.
