Vivian Faye Harris, 100, of Columbia City, died at 12:30 a.m. Thursday, October 15, 2009 at The Oaks Living Center where she had been a resident since December 2003.

She was born April 14, 1909 in Columbia Township, Whitley County the only child of Walter and Mary (Killian) Mosher. A lifelong resident of Columbia Township, she graduated from Columbia City High School in 1927. Active in music, speech, drama and girls basketball, she received her Bachelors degree from Indiana University in 1931 and Masters degree from St. Francis University in 1963.

On June 12, 1932 she was united in marriage to Gale R. Harris. They always made their home on the Harris family farm moving to their new home in 1965.

She served as Whitley County school attendance officer for four years and during World War II began teaching. She instructed English, Spanish and Journalism at Columbia City High School, Churubusco and later South Whitley for a total of 25 years, retiring in 1970. In her later years, she volunteered at Right Side Christian School.

Her memberships included Oak Grove United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years, National Education Society, National Society of Teachers of Spanish & Portuguese, Indiana Retired Teachers Association, Whitley County Retired Teachers Association, Alpha Delta Pi National Sorority (Beta Alpha Chapter in college to which she held the jewel degree and diamond circle distinction) and Philalethia Literary Society. She served on the Republican precinct committee for many years, was secretary for the Whitley County Republican Central Committee for 30 years and president of Whitley County Republican Women's Club for three years.

Surviving relatives include a son, Keith Harris of Mississippi; five grandchildren, Steve (Tracey) Harris of Morristown TN, Gary (Lisa) Harris of Columbia City, Cynthia (Gary) Schrader of Larwill, Deborah Knecht of Columbia City and Julia (David) Ozab of Eugene, Oregon; 12 great grandchildren; and 14 great great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Harvey Harris and Michael Dean Harris.

The funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to Oak Grove United Methodist Church or Whitley County Retired Teachers Association Scholarship at Whitley County Community Foundation.
