Robert D. France, age 89, formerly of Columbia City, IN died at 12:10 a.m. on Sunday April 1, 2007 in Akron, OH. He was born in Columbia City on September 25, 1917 to Emmet Ray and E. Irene (Shoda) France.

He graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1935 where he was a varsity squad cheerleader. As a young man, he played in the Columbia City Softball League

On February 8, 1941 he was united in marriage to Madelyn J. Stidham at their newly purchased home on North Walnut Street in Columbia City. He and his wife later resided for 51 years in the home they built on Squawbuck Road in Columbia City before moving several years ago to Akron, OH.

Mr. France and his wife owned and operated the North Side Grocery in Columbia City and the Butler Grocery Store in Butler, IN. Subsequently, he worked for many years at LML Corporation as the general manager and purchasing director. His memberships included Columbia City Masonic Lodge and Toastmasters. Among his many hobbies, Mr. France was an ardent lover of nature, expressed at his home by the planting and cultivation of many species of trees and plants.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Madelyn J. France of Akron, OH; daughters, Roberta Kaye (Thomas) Huckle of Cadillac, MI and Gina France (husband, Ted Ricci) of Medina, OH; grand- daughter, Laura Huckle (husband, Steve Betteley) of Grand Rapids, MI; grandson, Thomas Christopher (Katy) Huckle of Cadillac, MI; great-grandchildren, Carson Huckle Betteley and Avery Huckle Betteley and Thomas George Huckle and Susan Kaye Huckle. His parents and sister, Vera (France) Ramp preceded him in death.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm on Monday, April 9, 2007 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Funeral service at the funeral home on Monday, April 9, 2007 at 1:00 pm with Associate Pastor Mark Need of Columbia City United Methodist Church officiating. Committal service will follow at South Park (Annex) Cemetery, Columbia City.

In lieu of flowers, the France family has requested that memorials be given to the Indiana Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, 1505 N. Delaware Street, Suite 200, Indianapolis, IN 46202 or to a charity of the donor's choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
