Barclay Keith Bowman, 83, a retired mathematics and science teacher, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004 at his home at Smalley Lake [Indiana]. Mr. Bowman had been in failing health for several years.

Born on July 30, 1920 in Roanoke, a son of Donald M. and Lucille (Smyzer) Bowman, his formative years were spent in Kimmell where he attended grade school. He graduated from Columbia City High School and received an undergraduate degree and a masters degree in forestry from the University of Michigan. Later he earned a masters degree in education from Rutgers University.

During World War II, he served as a platoon leader in the U.S. Marine Corp.

On June 24, 1944, he was united in marriage to Florence G. Grissom and from 1946 to 1949 they made their home in Ypsilanti, Mich., then resided in Edinburg, Ind. until 1952. Later they lived in Rutgers, N.J., and Logansport. Since 1970 they made their home at Smalley Lake in Noble County. Mrs. Bowman died Oct. 11, 1991.

Mr. Bowman's first teaching position was at Wolf Lake High School, then the Lewis Class High School, North Webster, and he retired from the Wawasee High School in 1980.

Surviving relatives include a son, Robert K. (Jean) Bowman of Kittitas, Wash.; a daughter, Annette (Roger) Lemaster of Warsaw; three grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Pat Bowman and a sister, UnaDell Smith, both of Columbia City.

In keeping with the request of Mr. Bowman, a family funeral service is Friday at Smith and Sons Funeral Home in Columbia City with the Rev. J. Phillip Blake officiating. There is no visitation. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery at Warsaw.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the American Heart Fund or American Cancer Society.
