Notes:

Rev. Dr. A. Gail Dunn, 88, of Harrisburg [Pennsylvania], passed away Thursday, May 10, 2018 at Carolyn's House in Susquehanna Township.

Born January 11, 1930, in Columbia City, Indiana, he was a son of the late Thomas A.H. and Mary Ruth (Pritchard) Dunn. On New Year's Day 1950, he was united in marriage with the love of his life, Marilyn J. (Reames) Dunn. Gail and Marilyn shared a devotion to one another in marriage, and a devotion to Jesus Christ, that inspired many during their blessed union of 50 years.

Dr. Dunn earned an A.B. from Findlay College in 1952; a B.D. from Winebrenner Theological Seminary in 1955, and later, an M.Div. in 1978. He was presented with an Honorary Doctor of Divinity from Findlay in 1983.

A person who deeply loved the Word of God and the People of God, Dr. Dunn served the Sugar Ridge (OH); Anthony Wayne (IN) and Mendon (OH) churches before being transferred to Harrisburg First Church of God in 1967. He served Harrisburg First until being named the Conference Superintendent in 1984. Dr. Dunn retired from active ministry in 1994.

Dr. Dunn served as a member and chairman of the Board of Trustees of Winebrenner Theological Seminary from 1971-1995 and held numerous leadership roles in the Churches of God including President of the Denomination, President of the Ohio Conference, Chairman of the Commission on Publications, and Chairman of the Board of the Carlisle Church of God Home.

Coming to Harrisburg in the turbulent late 60's, Gail became actively involved in promoting racial reconciliation. In 1972, during the flooding caused by Hurricane Agnes, he served as the Coordinator of a Red Cross shelter at John Harris High School. Committed to young people, he served as a camp director at Doubling Gap Center.

Gail possessed an inextinguishable sense of humor. He was the Master Punster and was capable of stringing them together until you would cry "mercy". He loved humor with a twist. However, he taught that humor based on racial and ethnic stereotypes was absolutely unacceptable. Nurturing and encouraging young pastors and their wives was a particular passion of both he and Marilyn.

Dr. Dunn is survived by his sons, Rev. Dr. Stephen L. (Dianne) Dunn and Mark L. (Beth) Dunn, all of Chambersburg, and, daughters, Gaye Lynn (Scott) Hicks and Karen L. Anthony, all of Harrisburg. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Christine (Tim) Kiefer, Michael Dunn, Christopher (Megan) Dunn, Katie (Jason) Huther, Mark Anthony, Megan Hicks, Heather (Mark) Matlock, Scott Anthony, Thomas Dunn and Alexandra Dunn; great-grandchildren, Natalie, Ashley, Jake, Caleb, Abigail, Emmaline, Grace and Mark; and, nine nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and loving wife, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Lois Dunn, Elaine Anderson, Arlis Gamble and Maxine Culbertson; brothers, Samuel Jackie Dunn and Robert Dunn, and, a son-law, Warren Anthony.

Relatives and friends are invited to his Funeral Service on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at Chambers Hill United Methodist Church, 6300 Chambers Hill Road, Harrisburg, with Rev. Nick Keeney, officiating. Interment will follow at Paxtang Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M., at the Hetrick-Bitner Funeral Home, 3125 Walnut Street, Harrisburg, and on Saturday, from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M., at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Carolyn's House of Hospice of Central Pennsylvania, 1320 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17110; Winebrenner Theological Seminary, 950 N. Main Street, Findlay, OH 45840; or the ERC Ministry Training Institute, 900 S. Arlington Ave., Suite 120-B, Harrisburg, PA 17109.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hetrick-Bitner Funeral Home, Inc., 3125 Walnut Street, Harrisburg. Those wishing to share condolences or memories with the family are invited to visit BitnerCares.com.
