Married September 22, 1951. Moved from Chicago to Denver in 1953, and built a home on Lookout Mountain in 1956. Two sons, William & Bradley, and two grandchildren. Galen passed away February 8, 2015:

Galen W. Knickel, resident of Genesee [Colorado], walked ahead of his wife and family to see what was over the next ridge on Feb 8, 2015. He was lovingly cared for at home by his wife of 63 years, Lorie, and for a brief time by the attentive staff at the Life Care Center of Evergreen.

Galen was born June 10, 1926 to William and Gladys Knickel in Milwaukee, WI. After the family moved to Fairy Chasm, where he began his lifelong passion for hunting, he was graduated from Whitefish Bay High School. He entered the US Navy at Great Lakes Naval Station and was accepted into their Officer's Candidate School program, attaining the rank of Hospital Apprentice 2nd Class. He was graduated from Northwestern University in 1948 with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration.

He married Loraine Weikart on Sept. 22, 1951. After working in Chicago in magazine advertising space sales, the couple chose to move to Denver in 1953, and built a home on Lookout Mountain in 1956.

After a 16-year career at the Denver Post, in Retail Advertising Sales and as Circulation Director, Galen initiated the development of Genesee by acquiring land, water and mineral rights. He inspired Al Cohen Construction Company to lead the development and joined them as Project Manager. He was instrumental in changing the zoning and ultimately creating one of the earliest Planned Development projects in Colorado, also serving as the development's first Real Estate Broker. In 1976, Galen started, and was the President and Broker of, Parkland Real Estate Company, which he owned and operated for 36 years.

An avid gardener and lifelong upland bird and waterfowl hunter, crack shot, and fisherman, Galen enjoyed nothing more than watching the sun rise on a frosty morning sitting next to his sons in a "bird's nest" duck blind he'd made himself from driftwood logs and sticks on the banks of the St. Vrain River and later along the South Platte at the DT Ranch, where he was again instrumental in acquiring land and water rights and transforming the property into an award-winning wildlife habitat.

Galen leaves behind his wife, Lorie, one brother, David, two sons, William and Bradley, daughter-in-law Carin, two grandchildren, Brianne and Conner, a brother and sister-in-law, James and Claire Mulholland and their children, and a large number of cousins and friends.

A private memorial is planned. The family requests, instead of flowers, charitable donations to the University of Colorado Hospital Foundation, whose dedicated doctors and staff contributed so greatly to enhancing and extending Galen's life.
