Seattle Post-Intelligencer (WA) - March 24, 1999

Jacqueline Leigh Shafer, 62, the first woman to practice law in Island County, died last week at her home in Langley after a lengthy illness.

An Indiana native, Shafer was trained as an actress at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, and later in New York. After meeting her husband, Lawrence Shafer, she moved to Seattle and later Whidbey Island.

In the mid-1970s, after raising three children, she studied law at the University of Puget Sound, and later practiced for 15 years in Langley. She was also active in the Island Theatre and First Street Theatre on Whidbey Island, and with the Driftwood Theatre in Edmonds.

Shafer was a member in the National Organization for Women and the American Civil Liberties Union, and a supporter of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years; children Michael, Todd and Leigh Anne, all of Whidbey Island; and two grandchildren. Burial for Shafer was last Saturday at St. Augustine's-in-the-Woods Episcopal Church in Freeland.
