Linda Rae Berwert, 70, of South Bend [Indiana] passed away peacefully at her home at 7:20 p.m. Friday, January 4, 2019. She had been in declining health. She was born January 11, 1948 at Luckey Hospital in Wolf Lake, Indiana a daughter of the late Allan N. and Beryl E. (Shanklin) Rush.

She grew up in Columbia City graduating from Columbia City Joint High School in 1966. She attended Ball State College where she earned a Water Safety Instructor certification. She also attended Ravenscroft Beauty College, Fort Wayne.

On March 20, 1971 she was united in marriage to Edward Michael Berwert. They made their home in Fort Wayne until 1985 when they moved to South Bend.

She worked as a hairstylist while living in Fort Wayne and as a swimming instructor. After moving to South Bend, she became a swimming instructor at the University of Notre Dame and for the Special Olympics.

She was a former member of the Grace Lutheran Church, Columbia City and Delta Theta Tau. Enjoying all water activities, she loved her lake home where she took joy in maintaining it and being with her family. She like collegiate sports especially Notre Dame football, men’s and women’s basketball, and IU basketball.

Surviving is her husband, Edward Michael "Mike"; two sons, Andrew M (Danielle) Berwert, Fishers, and Scott Berwert, South Bend; grandchildren, Hollyn Berwert and Madelyn Gibbs; and a brother, Michael (Jo Ellen) Rush, Columbia City.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the service Saturday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to Heart to Heart Hospice or the American Kidney Foundation.
