Emma Jean Phillips, 89, of Madison, passed away Sept. 28, 2009 at the King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison [Indiana]. She was born Feb. 6, 1920 in Columbia City, the daughter of Eugene and Margaret "Maggie" North Young.

Mrs. Phillips graduated in 1937 from Columbia City High School, and was a professional alterations lady. She had worked for Montgomery Ward and Knobbson's in Fort Wayne and was also self-employed.

She moved to Madison in 2003 and was a member of Saint John's United Church of Christ. She also loved to oil paint and take care of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Jean Phillips of Madison and Carolyn (Johnny) Arnold of Defuniak Springs, Fla.; four sons and daughters-in-law: Dave (Linda) Phillips of Hanover, Md., R. Dean (Rebecca) Phillips of Columbia City, John G. "Jack" III (Dianne) Phillips of Columbia City, and Wayne (Joan) Phillips of Fort Wayne; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Gilbert "Jack" Phillips, II, to whom she was married July 25, 1937 in Indianapolis; three sisters, Esther Ellen Glascow, Margaret Hamilton and Katherine Jones; and two grandsons, Jason Arnold and Jim Phillips.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home in Columbia City, with burial in the Oak Grove (Compton) Cemetery. Friends may call at the DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association or to Saint John's United Church of Christ in Madison. Memorial envelopes are available at the Lytle Funeral Chapel in Madison.
